What Inspired Me To Write
I was inspired to start writing because I wanted children to have stories that reflect real struggles while still offering hope and healing. Too often, kids face challenges like friendship pressures, loss, or self-doubt, and I wanted my books to be a safe space where they could see themselves, feel supported, and discover their inner strength. Becoming an independent publisher gave me the freedom to tell these stories authentically, in my own voice.

Who I Write For
My ideal readers are children between the ages of 7 and 14 who are curious, sensitive, and growing into themselves. They may be facing challenges like friendship struggles, family changes, or self-doubt, and they’re looking for stories that reflect their experiences while offering hope and encouragement. I also write with parents, educators, and caregivers in mind — those who want books that spark meaningful conversations and build resilience in young readers.

Behind the Scenes
My days are a balance of teaching, writing, and community work. As a professor of Health Sciences in Chicago, I spend part of my day guiding students in programs that prepare them for careers in healthcare. Outside the classroom, I’m deeply involved in community activism through my “Do For Self” work, which focuses on restoring independence, ownership, and sustainability in Black communities. From encouraging property ownership and supporting Black businesses, to advocating for farming, banking, and community resilience, I believe these efforts connect directly to my writing. My books reflect the same mission: empowering the next generation to face challenges with strength and to believe in their own ability to create change.

What Does Success Mean TO ME
Success for me means creating stories that children and young readers can return to again and again—books that guide them through challenges, give them strength, and remind them that they are not alone. I hope my work becomes a trusted resource that helps young people think before they act, build resilience, and find hope in difficult times. At the same time, I see my authorship as a foundation for building a sustainable career—one that allows me to live comfortably while continuing to pour into my community and write full time. For me, success is both impact and independence: helping young readers grow, and creating a life where my gifts make room for me.
