Mission Statement:

The Literacy Alchemy Initiative transforms reading into empowerment by helping youth turn the power of words into self-discovery, imagination, and personal growth. The program bridges creativity, confidence, and comprehension, promoting reading as a tool for healing and possibility.

Vision:

To inspire young readers—especially in underserved communities—to see literacy as magic, strength, and transformation. Through books, author visits, and reading campaigns, Literacy Alchemy redefines reading as an act of power and pride.

My Reading L.I.G.H.T

At the heart of Literacy Alchemy is L.I.G.H.T— a pathway for learning, healing, and growth.

What L.I.G.H.T. Stands For:

L – Learn to Listen

I – Imagine Boldly

G – Grow from Every Page

H – Heal Through Words

T – Transform the Mind

Core Goals

  • Strengthen reading confidence and fluency.
  • Promote independent and family reading habits.
  • Use literature as a catalyst for critical thinking and emotional growth.
  • Highlight Black and Brown authors whose stories reflect real youth experiences.
  • Build partnerships with schools, libraries, and community centers.

Program Overview

My Reading Light is a youth-centered literacy campaign under the Literacy Alchemy umbrella. It encourages students to shine their reading light by completing reading challenges, journaling, and attending author-led read-alouds. Each child’s progress is symbolized by receiving a “light” bookmark or pin—representing their growth as readers.
